Canonical Launches Snappy Ubuntu Core For IoT Devices!

Canonical's light-weight version of Ubuntu - Snappy Ubuntu Core is set to power IoT devices.

Canonical has been pretty active in the development of Ubuntu operating system over last few years. The company is working hard to extend its traditional desktop operating system to much broader range of products. Canonical has recently introduced the light version of Ubuntu distribution. The latest Snappy Ubuntu Core is designed to run large-scale cloud applications and to power IoT devices.

Snappy Ubuntu is based on Ubuntu Core project. As the name suggests, it is stripped down version of Ubuntu. Snappy is designed to offer simpler package management and to update system with support for transactional updates. Snappy Ubuntu supports Docker, which is open platform for distributed application development. Snappy Ubuntu can run on minimal hardware configuration. You can run Snappy on 600MHz CPU, 128MB RAM and 4GB of storage. The OS requires just 40MB of RAM to process.

Currently, IoT devices are powered by OS that is designed and developed by particular vendor. Like, Samsung Galaxy Gear works perfectly well with Samsung Galaxy Phone. Samsung has designed its IoT architecture where all devices like Samsung television, refrigerator, dishwasher can communicate with each other. Snappy Ubuntu is set to change this theory by introducing universal operating system and common backend for application support. The standard cloud interface of Snappy Ubuntu will simplify cross-communication question.

Another advantage of Snappy Ubuntu Core model is that it can provide standard updates and security patches. In case of IoT infrastructure, you don’t have to rely on manufacture specific updates. Even though market penetration of Internet of Things is comparatively negligible right now, it is going to increase in coming years. Standard cloud service can play vital role in growth of IoT. The long term plan of Snappy Ubuntu will help company to penetrate new markets.

Snappy Ubuntu is still very early stage project by Canonical. We all are familiar with Ubuntu’s ability to penetrate new markets. Canonical may even bring Unity UI with Snappy Ubuntu. Focusing on IoT can be a great way for Canonical to expand Linux market. It is similar to the way that Linux expanded from desktops to servers and embedded systems.
