Robots are nothing new to healthcare. A number of robots have been
introduced for various physical therapies and help in surgery. Robots
are being used to help train doctors on a wide range of medical
treatments and surgeries. Here we will talk about 10 most useful medical
robots which have huge potential to transform the healthcare sector.

1. Vasteras Giraff:
It's a mobile communication tool
which enables elder people communicate with the external world. It's
controlled by a remote and it has wheels, camera and a monitor. It's a
robot which has two-way video-calling feature like Skype. This robot is
also a part of additional project called GiraffPlus which enables
investigators evaluate how a robot can be incorporated into a larger
system for better care.
2. Robot Patients:
Medical
students get some relief from bookish knowledge when they are equipped
with these robots. Training through robots is an old tradition as robots
are highly useful in providing practical education to doctors. Robot
patients have a beating heart, eyes and they can also breathe. Through
robot training students learn to check blood pressure and detect other
vital symptoms. These robots have also models for pregnant woman and a
baby.
3. Aethon TUG:
Supplies like medication,
linens and food can be moved with this automated system. This robot is
able to walk through hospital premises, elevators and compounds on
scheduled or on-demand deliveries. The system increases productivity.
4. Robots To Diagnose Disease:
Diagnosis
of disease is the most vital part of medical practices. Sometimes
various elements go untraced in blood tests or X-Ray. Robots offer more
specific diagnostic functionalities.
5. RP-VITA:
Remote
Presence Virtual + Independent Telemedicine Assistant, or RP-VITA, is a
joint venture between robotics firm iRobot and InTouch Health and this
robot was made of AVA telepresence technology. It allows physicians to
take care of patients remotely. It features mapping and obstacle
detection.
6. Robots for surgeries:
Robots can
also perform surgeries as they are able to make more precise movements,
thereby reducing risks. Through a smaller incision robots can move,
reducing infection risk and speed up the recovery process. These robots
include NeuroArm, Heartlander and more.
7. Bestic:
It's
a small robotic arm which has a spoon on its end. The spoon can be
controlled by a user and it has a unique design which easily fits on
tables. Bestic is a medical device which is usually bought through
prescription only.
8. Robots to Rehabilitate Patients:
If
patients are subjected to long term physical therapy and require
rehabilitation to regain mobility then robots can be of great help for
such patients. Through more effective treatment these robots ensure
speedy recovery.
9. Nursing Assistant:
It uses a
direct physical interface (DPI) with which a nurse can have direct
control over the movement of the robot. The human scale mobile
manipulator is called Cody. The nurse is able to lead and position Cody
by making direct contact with its body.
10. Robots to restore lost body parts:
Robots
are used to serve as replacement of lost limbs and other body parts.
Scientists are working on technology to use robots to create human heart
and other organs too. An artificial jellyfish has already been created
and now the research work is carried forward to human organs.
So the possibilities seem endless regarding what robots can do in medical fields in future!
