Thursday, November 13, 2014: Large data centers are dynamically scalable, automated and they have virtualised platforms for efficient access. Big enterprises need to adopt to open system for their infrastructure as independent application and workload is their high priority. There is massive increase in use of open source systems by cloud and service based IT models. Big organisations such as Singapore Stock Exchange, Wall Street, some global investment banks use open source infrastructure.

But, open source models are yet to reach the level beyond particular infrastructure layer. There are some challenges that every rising technology faces, open source infrastructure is going through the same phase. If some structural challenges are overcome, the open source infrastructure can leverage the market in coming years. A panel of leading IT experts had a meeting in Singapore to discuss the challenges being faced by open source infrastructures.
Enterprises are leaning more towards open source as they are adopting the cloud within their infrastructure. Mainly because irrespective of technology platform, SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) enterprises are concerned only about the output from their technology. And second reason being, the cloud has introduced large number of segments that it is impossible for one software vendor or enterprise to excel in all the segments.
Mixing and matching environments and parts of different builds, software platforms is the key of innovative development. And open source enables and promotes such collaborative type of development. The huge community that Linux and OpenStack has built is adding endless possibilities of innovation every other day. Open source offers huge informal infrastructure which is beneficial for development of any organisation.
Talent identification is another major challenge in open source market. Open source developers are always afraid of their young graduate to replace them because of number of new languages emerging in open source systems. Open source developer has to be in the learning curve along with the work. Organizations working with open source systems have the biggest concern of talent shortage. However, certification courses offered by Red Hat are quite helpful in this area.
Enterprises need to start preparing from now itself for the technology curve that is approaching. Vendor can definitely make assumptions about the future of technology but as compared to the giant firms like Google and Facebook, enterprises are in very comparable scale. Open source has certainly become a mature platform with the growth of enterprises. Future of open source can be seen taking shape in data centers around the world. |
