Thursday, November 13, 2014: Are you annoyed with your old PC just because it's getting slow? And might be planning to buy some new stuff, which sounds quite exciting too. But before you go ahead with investing in any new stuff, you should always give it a second thought, if you can make out with your old stuff or not. Here we can give you some tweaks and tips to make your old PC a brand new one.

1. Install better, free software:
Are you still using Adobe Reader to read PDFs and expensive anti-virus suites? Well, you can go for improving your experience with some better programs too. There are so many alternatives to the traditional ones, which are also sometimes free.
2. Uninstall unused programs:
When you bought your PC, there were so many programs pre-loaded, which you have never ever used. You probably have never known about their existance too. Some of these programs also run background processes whenever you load your compute. Just remove all these unnecessary programs. Go through the installed software list and uninstall all those which are of no practical use.
3. Upgrade your RAM:
Random Access Memory or RAM is one of the main components in your computer which is not at all expensive and it's also very easy to install. You need to upgrade RAM of your computer, if it's running too slow and before upgrading it, you need to check with your computer manufacturer first and get the correct type of RAM, specifically for your PC.
4. Install an SSD:
If your computer is still feeling tired, then you have some other best options too. You can make some changes to its hardware. Upgrade your traditional hard drive to a solid state drive or SSD. This upgrade is able to blow your computer away. This is one of the best solutions for PC upgrade and 128GB SSDs are easily available for just $100.
5. Swap out your graphics card:
If you are not a very talented gamer, then just remove the old graphics card and replace with a new model. Games require much more firepower these days as there are so many new consoles in the market, but gaming can become a whole new experience with high-end graphics card. If you upgrade to a new graphics card, then it will have affect on the processor too, definitely.
6. Go more wired when it comes to your PC: Wireless internet and other wireless accessories are always a convenient options. But they are not the best all the time. If you're running your computer on a wireless network, then there are wide chances that file transfers will be come slower between machines. Internet connection, when wireless, is also not very reliable all the time. Internet speeds in wireless connections are not slow but wiring your computer with Ethernet is much a better option.
7. Prevent unnecessary start ups:
This method primarily affects how long your PC takes to start, but many of the programs, which get launched during start up, continue to run in the background, consuming more memory. Click Start and Run. Type msconfig inside Run and press enter. When the Startup tab appears, the list comes forward of all the programs which start running inside your computer. You can manually deselect all those which are not at all necessary or click Disable All and then select which you want to run.
8. Clean out your Temp Files using Disk Cleanup:
You can free disk space on your computer using a Disk Cleanup tool to remove temp files, clean recycle bin and other unimportant files too. To start the program, click the Start button and type Disk Cleanup in the Search Box, then click on Disk Cleanup. When the list of drives appear, click on the hard drive which you need to clean up. On the Disk Cleanup tab, click the check boxes for all those files which you want to remove and then click OK to remove them.
9. Slinging files:
You can transform an old PC into a dedicated home theatre PC or a file server too. It's not a very challenging job. There are some free software like Snag Media Portal, OpenELEC, Kodi and so on to built a server out of your old PC.
10. Remap your unused keys too:
Do you need the Print Screen? Do you remember when you last used the likes of it? So you are free to turn those keys into something more useful. Remap any key to another one with a tool called SharpKeys or give them new functions with tools like AutoHotkey. |
