Find out if Android Lollipop is really different than KitKat.

Google's Android 5.0 gained quite a lot of popularity among techies due
to its secret name 'L'. Google successfully maintained the secrecy until
the official launch of OS. Company announced the full form of L as,
'Lollipop' while releasing the next generation Android OS. While plenty
of devices are still waiting to see KitKat flavour, Google is rolling
out the official Lollipop update to the Nexus devices. Manufacturers
will take time to push Lollipop to some devices. Some devices will not
get to taste the Lollipop at all. KitKat users are really impatient to
try Lollipop on their devies but, is Lollipop really that different than
KitKat? Let's find out.

1. Performance
Runtime ART comes is packed as default
option in Lollipop which will help Lollipop to run faster and smoother.
Runtime ART was introduced in KitKat as alternative option. All apps in
Play Store are compatible to run with runtime ART.
Google claims
that Lollipop is the least power consuming OS as compared to KitKat.
So, users will notice significant difference in battery life. Lollipop
offers multiple cards for the same app. Users can open multiple windows
of the same app. This is great update to the multitasking on smartphone.
Lollipop can open RAW image format, this is huge benefit for
photographers, this will let them edit and upload their photographs on
cloud right from their Android Lollipop device.
2. Notification
Google
had introduced lockscreen notifications in KitKat, it has been improved
in Lollipop. Users were able to view notifications in KitKat but now
they can even interact, reply to messages right from lockscreen. Many
elements in notification panel have been improved in Lollipop.
Do
not disturb mode has been added to Lollipop, users can customize and
set specific hours for DND mode. Few important buttons like flashlight,
hotspot and screen capture were missing in quick settings bar of KitKat,
they are now added in Lollipop.
3. Connectivity and API
Google
has focused more on making Android versatile in Lollipop. Over 5000
APIs of Lollipop are available for developers to use. There is
consistency in synchronization of apps and data in Lollipop. Google has
added functionality to control Lollipop smart device using smartwatch
voice commands.
The experience of using Android will be more
consistent and synchronized across smartphone, tablet, TV, smartwatches
etc. Unlike KitKat, Lollipop has smart WiFi detection function. Lollipop
doesn't connect to the WiFi network if there is no actual data
connection being offered by the network.
4. Material World
Lollipop
is based on Material Design language. This new design brings more
unified, clean and rich UI design on the smartphone. Lollipop has clean
and bold lines, fun animation of transforming colors. The UI looks more
flat and sleek now. The visuals of notifications and notification bar is
highly inspired by Material Design.
5. Security
Data
encryption is enabled by default in Lollipop. There is an option to
hide sensitive information from being displayed on phone in Lollipop.
New unlocking features in Lollipop ensure more security of user data.
Users can pair their Lollipop smartphone with their Android smartwatch
using Bluetooth and use the smartwatch to unlock the phone. Lollipop
offers multiple user profiles along with guest profile, users can
customize the access to each profile.
